The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

The first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants showed us that a pair of jeans can keep a group of friends together. In the second, it seems like not even the magic of the pants can keep friends Tibby, Lena, Carmen, and Bridget together.

The film picks up with a quick recap of the first, and then shows all four girls after their first year of college (and they all managed to get into Ivy League schools). Carmen (Ferrara) has been feeling neglected this past school year, and is looking forward to the summer to rekindle her friendships. However, the rest of the group has already made individual summer plans. Lena (Bledel) takes a summer art class and after having her heart crushed by her ex-boyfriend, starts to fall for the nude model; Bridget (Lively) discovers that her father was hiding letters that her grandmother wrote her just before she leaves for an archeological dig in Turkey; Tibby (Tamblyn) stays in New York to write a romantic comedy and has a pregnancy scare with her boyfriend; which leaves Carmen to go to Vermont to work at a theatre program.

As the summer progresses, the girls continue to pass around the jeans, but shut each other out of their lives. It isn’t until Lena’s sister, Effie, loses the pants in Greece that the girls finally come together and go to Greece to find them. They never do find the pants, but they do rediscover their friendship.

All of the leading actresses deliver strong performances, especially America Ferrara. Carmen gets cast in a play, and isn’t the strongest actress; so having Ferrara, an Emmy Award-winning actress playing a not as talented actress was really entertaining. A lot of the supporting characters were also well-acted. Tom Wisdom and Jesse Williams played love interests for Carmen and Lena respectively, but besides being eye candy, the two carve out specific, interesting characters that actually should have been developed further And though hardly in the film, Blythe Danner stole all of her scenes as Bridget’s grandmother.

Many girls in college can related to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, as they, like the sisterhood, are probably struggling to keep their lifelong friendships alive when attending different colleges. The theme of friendship transcending schools, countries, and even a pair of magical pants is very touching and ends the film on an endearing note.

The DVD comes equipped with a modest amount of extras. There is a gag reel and some additional scenes, but there is also a short feature about the last scene of the film when all four girls jump off a cliff and into the ocean. It seems that fans’ reactions to the first film are the reason that the script writer and director decided to end the film with the jump. The best extra, though, is loading the movie into your computer to access the digital copy to play on your iPod or other personal media device.
