Ron Howard to direct Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Towers’

Universal Pictures and NBC Universal Television are bringing The Dark Tower to the movies. Three films as well as a TV show based on the Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” novels, short stories and comic books are in the works.

Ron Howard will direct the first film and first season of the TV show, which will be written by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman.

The Dark Tower, a sci-fi horror story, tells of the mysterious Gunslinger as he travels across a desolate and vaguely post-apocalyptic landscape in his quest for a black tower. Portals along the way eventually allow contact with our own modern world.

“I’ve been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers around the world,” King said. “Ron, Akiva, Brian along with Universal and NBC have a deep interest and passion for the ‘The Dark Tower’ series and I know that will translate into an intriguing series of films and TV shows that respect the origins and the characters in ‘The Dark Tower’ that fans have come to love.”

Just a Prediction…. “Låt den rätte komma in” Edition…

I have been seeing trailers everywhere for the Horror film “Let Me In.” This American remake is a product of a Swedish novel which was turned into a movie titled, Låt den rätte komma in. I have both read this novel and seen the Swedish film. First off, the novel was spectacular. The film was just as incredible. It dares to question some of the largest taboos of adolescents dealing with dark issues such as drug use, prostitution, pedophilia and of course the super natural essence of it all. The beautiful balance of theses hard hitting and powerful issues infused with that of Vampire lore is so captivating that audiences will change after experiencing this story. UNFORTUNATELY, Americans have got a hold of this story and are now remaking it calling it “Let me in.” To me, even the American title, with its few word difference, (the Swedish translation being “Let the Right One In,”) is already sounding watered down and unfulfilled. I may be completely off, but my prediction… AWFUL! Come on Americans!!! Why can’t we just appreciate international films?? Why must you take these terrifying and highly complex foreign films and dull them down to some slop that you can pass off during the newest craze? How many Japanese films have we butchered? How many French masterpieces have we drug through dirt? I may be completely off on this one. I might watch “Let Me In” and find it just as captivating as the original. Maybe this American version will hit all of the taboos and get to the grit of things. MAYBE?! If the past American remakes have taught us anything… appreciate foreign films and leave it at that! We will keep an eye out on this one….

Bella Celebrates Birthday with Eclipse in Theaters

To celebrate the special day of the film’s main female character, Summit will drop the movie again in theaters nationwide on September 10.

The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse has entertained moviegoers this summer but fans can see it again in theaters this month. This third Twilight film will grace cinemas across the nation on Friday, September 10 to celebrate Bella’s birthday which actually falls on date 13 of the same month.

In Eclipse, Bella is threatened by Victoria who comes back to Seattle to take revenge for James’ death as seen in the first movie. In the meantime, with her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life, which is to be turned into a vampire or not.

Starring Kristen Stewart as the female lead character, this follow-up to The Twilight Saga’s New Moon also still features Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner as Edward and Jacob respectively. The drama thriller debuted number one at North American Box Office on its first weekend and has collected $671.6 million worldwide as of press time.

The next installment of the vampire drama series will be split into two parts: The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn Part I which is due in the U.S. November 18, 2011 and The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn Part II which is slated for November 16, 2012 release. It is recently reported that the production in Vancouver will start in February 2011.

October DVD and Blu Ray Releases

With October and Halloween coming up, our preview will concentrate on new DVD and Blu Ray releases that have a little horror/slasher flavor.

The Blair Witch Project (Blu Ray release date: October 5th)

Released to theaters in 1999, this film could actually be called the one of the first “mock-umentaries” as it told the story of three students who made a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local legend in Maryland. Supposedly the three filmmakers disappeared, never to be seen again although their video and audio was recovered that gave clues to their fate.

Filmed in eight days with a handheld camera and a final budget of between $500,000 and $700,000, Blair Witch grossed almost a quarter of a billion dollars. It was actually the most talked about film of 1999, a year that contained some great films such as American Beauty, Boys Don’t Cry and The Matrix.

The Blair Witch Project was released on DVD on November 30, 1999; however it was presented in standard format that is now considered obsolete. A Blu Ray release from Lionsgate is scheduled for October 5th with a list price of $19.99. The Blu Ray version comes on a single disc featuring audio commentary, extra footage, and four never-before-seen alternate endings.

Nightmare on Elm Street 2010 (DVD and Blu Ray release date: October 5th)

Previewed last April on our sister site Static Multimedia, this was not another sequel to the series but a remake of the original 1984 film. Although Wes Craven had nothing to do with this version, the premise and characters are all the same as the original. It starred Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger and grossed over $110,000,000 in spite of rather tepid reviews.

Warner Brothers now releases the DVD and Blu Ray on October 5th. The DVD’s only feature will be “Freddy Krueger Reborn”. The Blu Ray special features will include the DVD’s featurette along with a deleted scene, an alternate opening and ending, and the “Maniacal Movie Mode” It will list for $35.99

Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (Blu Ray release date: October 19th)

I had to put at least one over-the-top release on here. This one is for anyone who has a fascination with teen films, gore films and possibly Asian women as it combines all three. And it’s a parody on aspects of Japanese culture as well. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Made in Japan, it was released over a year ago to US audiences. I guess they finally felt it was worthy enough to release a Blu Ray version. No sense going over the plot or actors because you probably won’t be watching this for anything but the blood and guts and won’t know the actors unless you’re a Japanese teen/gore film aficionado.

No info on features for this one, most viewers likely won’t care about that. The price doesn’t seem very reasonable at $29.98, but Amazon has it marked down to $21.99. I suppose if you’re that hardcore cost is not a consideration. Enjoy.

Alien Anthology (Blu Ray release date: October 26th)

Previously reviewed on Digital Domain earlier this summer, Alien Anthology will be coming out next month. This is a massive set of all the Alien films, both on DVD and Blu Ray with additional discs for features…a total of 6 discs originally priced at $139.99 but now at $97.99.

Los Angeles Lakers – 2010 NBA Finals Series: Collector’s Edition (Blu Ray release date: October 26th)

Okay, it’s not a horror film unless you’re a Boston Celtic fan, but as NBA hoops will be in their preseason during October, this may be a nice release to tide you over until they start playing for real. It was a great championship series even if you hate Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson and hardcore fans may feel it’s worth the $69.99 price. And it just may be worth it considering what you get. The box set contains all seven games in their entirety, with exclusive bonus features that include footage and commentary away from the court itself and in the locker room.

Alyssa’s Pick of the Week: I’m Still Here

Documentary/Biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Casey Affleck. Opening September 10th. A documentary that follows Joaquin Phoenix as he announces his retirement from acting and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. – Not Rated (Limited)

This week I picked the documentary “I’m Still Here” because like a lot of people who follow the media, I am curious to know what made Joaquin Phoenix make his decisions. He has been the target for a lot of spoofing: such as Ben Stiller donning a full beard and looking dazed at an award show or when a presenter at the Independent Spirit Awards came dressed as Phoenix and presented an award with Batman. I’m ready to hear Phoenix’s side of the story. Why he went from a two-time Academy Award nominated actor to a confused spirit supposedly going off the deep end. And if he’s not crazy, which I’m rooting for him not to be, I really wonder what inspired him to dabble in hip hop, which is basically foreign territory to him.

‘Let Me In’ Movie Stills

Let Me In is a haunting and provocative thriller in theaters October 1st. Written and directed by filmmaker Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and produced by legendary British horror brand Hammer Films, it is based on the best-selling Swedish novel Lat den Ratte Komma (Let The Right One In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist, and the highly-acclaimed film of the same name.

Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick-Ass) stars as Abby, a mysterious 12-year old girl, who moves next door to Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Road). Owen is a social outcast who is viciously bullied at school and in his loneliness, forms a profound bond with his new neighbor. Owen can’t help noticing that Abby is like no one he has ever met before.
