Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

Aar mateys! Good news for all ye shipmates…there will be a fourth installment of a much-loved sea adventure. So grab some rum and prepare yourself for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in theaters May 20, 2011.

What’s missing from this film? Well, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly, but the question is: do we even need them? After all, it is that lovable drunken barnacle-head Jack Sparrow, portrayed by the always eccentric Johnny Depp, that has made this film franchise such a success.

What’s new to this film? Johnny Depp’s co-star from the hit 2001 movie Blow, Penelope Cruz. And a new director, Rob Marshall, who most recently directed the four-time Academy Award nominated musical, Nine. Marshall is replacing Gore Verbinski as the director. Ian McShane will play Blackbeard.

What’s the same in this film? Jack Sparrow will still be portrayed by Johnny Depp. Disney’s name is still all over it, Jerry Bruckheimer is a producer, and Ted Elliot is the writer. Geoffrey Rush will return in his role as Barbossa.

Regardless of what’s missing, what’s new, and what’s the same… it won’t be surprising when this film dominates the box office opening weekend. People are eager to see Jack Sparrow’s next adventure.

Tim Allen in Toy Story 4?

Allen has committed to voice Buzz again, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Pixar is fully committed to another feature-length sequel of the franchise. But rumors are buzzing that Disney and Pixar are reluctant to end the franchise despite previous claims that Toy Story 3 was the finale.

With Allen on board, this could be an indication that the other Toy Story stars are also interested. Time will tell..

Holland Theaters Boycotting Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton’s fantasy film “Alice in Wonderland” is facing a boycott from movie theaters in Holland because of plans to release the movie on DVD just three months after it hits theaters. The Disney production, which stars Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway, is due to open in the country on March 10 – but Dutch theater owners are refusing to show the film worrying that they will lose out on big box office bucks because fans will opt to wait for the early DVD release.

Approximately 80 and 85 percent of all theaters in the Netherlands have decided not to show the film.

Youry Bredewold, a spokesman for the National Board of Cinema Owners, says “Disney is not keeping its part of the bargain. There is an agreement between movie distributors and cinema owners that there must be a window of at least four months between the cinema release and the DVD release.”
