Facing Kate is the New Character on USA

USA keeps up the momentum with the premiere of its much anticipated newest original series, Facing Kate, starring Sarah Shahi (Life,The L Word), which will join the USA line-up in January.

Facing Kate centers on Kate Reed (Shahi), a top litigator frustrated with the endless bureaucracy and daily injustices she witnesses, who turns on the system to become the ultimate anti-lawyer: a mediator. Using her knowledge of the law, along with her savvy, intuition and a whatever-it-takes approach to resolving conflict, Kate finds the middle ground for a wide variety of adversaries — from Fortune 500 corporations to bitter divorces.

After the death of her father, she finds herself at odds with the new boss, her stepmother Lauren Reed (Virginia Williams)…and in bed with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Justin Patrick (Michael Trucco), a top gun in the DA’s office. Helping her keep all of this chaos at bay is her trusted, geek-chic assistant Leonardo (Baron Vaughn).

Facing Kate was created and is written and executive produced by Michael Sardo. Steve Stark also serves as executive producer and the series comes from Universal Cable Productions.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Animal Kingdom

Welcome to the terrifying Melbourne crime underworld, where tensions are on the brink of exploding between felons and renegade cops – the Wild West played out on the city’s streets in broad daylight. The Cody brothers, a gang of armed robbers, are in the process of initiating their teenage nephew Joshua ‘J’ (James Frecheville) into their frightening world after the death of his mother and under the watchful eye of his matriarchal grandmother, Smurf (Jacki Weaver), a modern-day Ma Barker.

Ben Mendelsohn plays Pope, the oldest brother of the Cody clan, who tries unsuccessfully to come to terms with the fact that his partner and best friend, Barry ‘Baz’ Brown (Joel Edgerton), wants out of the game. Craig (Sullivan Stapleton), the middle brother with a hair trigger, deals and does cocaine while the youngest brother Darren (Luke Ford) fights with his conscience as he participates in the family business. All of them are adored, sustained and supported by Smurf, who seems to be pulling the strings.

J quickly comes to believe that he is a player in this world, but soon discovers that the entire situation is far larger and more menacing than he could ever imagine. Guy Pearce plays senior police officer Nathan Leckie, who, recognizing that J’s youth and inexperience might well prove to be the key to finally conquering the Codys, tries to lure him into the fold after the death of a close associate. In order to survive, J must determine how the game is played and choose his place in this cunning and brutal animal kingdom.

True Story of Mao’s Last Dance

From Academy Award nominee Bruce Beresford (DRIVING MISS DAISY, TENDER MERCIES) comes MAO’S LAST DANCER, the inspiring true story of Li Cunxin and his extraordinary journey from a poor upbringing in rural China to international stardom as a world-class ballet dancer. Based on the best selling autobiography, MAO’S LAST DANCER weaves a moving tale about the quest for freedom and the courage it takes to live your own life. The film compellingly captures the struggles, sacrifices and triumphs, as well as the intoxicating effects of first love and celebrity amid the pain of exile.

MAO’S LAST DANCER stars Chi Cao, a gifted dancer and principal at the Birmingham Royal Ballet making his impressive screen debut as Li Cunxin. The cast is rounded out by Bruce Greenwood (STAR TREK; THE SWEET HEREAFTER), Kyle Maclachlan (“Sex and the City”; “Desperate Housewives”), Joan Chen (LUST, CAUTION; THE LAST EMPEROR) and Amanda Schull (CENTER STAGE; “One Tree Hill”).

Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere

From Academy Award-winning writer/director Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation,” “The Virgin Suicides,” “Marie Antoinette”), “Somewhere” is a witty, moving, and empathetic look into the orbit of actor Johnny Marco (played by Stephen Dorff). You have probably seen him in the tabloids; Johnny is living at the legendary Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood. He has a Ferrari to drive around in, and a constant stream of girls and pills to stay in with. Comfortably numbed, Johnny drifts along. Then, his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) from his failed marriage arrives unexpectedly at the Chateau. Their encounters encourage Johnny to face up to where he is in life and confront the question that we all must: which path in life will you take. Filmed entirely on location, “Somewhere” reunites the writer/director with “Lost in Translation” editor Sarah Flack and production designer Anne Ross. Stacey Battat (“Broken English”) is the costume designer, and Harris Savides (“Elephant”) is the director of photography, on “Somewhere.”

In theaters December 22, 2010 (Limited)

The Lovely Bones DVD, Lovely

Based on the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones makes a triumphant and graceful leap to the big screen thanks to Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson (Lord of The Rings Trilogy, King Kong). Is it a horror story? Yes. Is it a drama? Yes. A fantasy? Yes! It’s all those genres and something else swirling in the mix that is all Jackson. With a extraordinary cast which includes Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights), Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner), Susan Sarandon (Oscar, Dead Man Walking), Stanley Tucci (in an Oscar and Golden Globe nominated role), and the amazing Saoirse Ronan (Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, Atonement) as Susie Salmon, that all breathe fresh air into this tragic tale of life and everything that comes after.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Film on Fire

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original title in Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor – “Men Who Hate Women”) – ‎This Swedish English-subtitled suspense/thriller‎ based on the award-winning crime novel by the late Swedish writer Stieg Larsson and directed by Niels Arden Oplev is, in a word, phenomenal.  If you’re a crime-thriller aficionado you so owe it to yourself to check out this very stylized, explicitly original foreign film starring Peter Haber, Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, David Dencik, and Georgi Staykov.  Seriously, the OMG did that just happen factor is off the charts.  Yet it is not exploitive or gratuitous but rather a brutally sad reminder of the magnitude of its horrific subject matter.

Noomi Rapace as hacker Lisbeth Salander

On the edge of your seat and gasping for a break, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo never dumbs down or numbs out as the acting is completely on fire, especially Goth-queen, dragon-tattooed, brains n’ beauty Noomi Rapace as hacker Lisbeth Salander -  Wow.  She carries the film in such a way as to remind even a die-hard Jody Foster fan, that there are other actors with her talent hiding in the shadows of films abroad.

Synopsis

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate.
