The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Film on Fire

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original title in Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor – “Men Who Hate Women”) – ‎This Swedish English-subtitled suspense/thriller‎ based on the award-winning crime novel by the late Swedish writer Stieg Larsson and directed by Niels Arden Oplev is, in a word, phenomenal.  If you’re a crime-thriller aficionado you so owe it to yourself to check out this very stylized, explicitly original foreign film starring Peter Haber, Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, David Dencik, and Georgi Staykov.  Seriously, the OMG did that just happen factor is off the charts.  Yet it is not exploitive or gratuitous but rather a brutally sad reminder of the magnitude of its horrific subject matter.

On the edge of your seat and gasping for a break, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo never dumbs down or numbs out as the acting is completely on fire, especially Goth-queen, dragon-tattooed, brains n’ beauty Noomi Rapace as hacker Lisbeth Salander -  Wow.  She carries the film in such a way as to remind even a die-hard Jody Foster fan, that there are other actors with her talent hiding in the shadows of films abroad.

Synopsis

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate.

Predators Trailer Rips You Apart

With summer fast approaching, so is  the action-horror-thriller Predators, a reinvention of the classic sci-fi franchise.  Not the same muscle-bound Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle from the 80’s but an equally strong ensemble of good character actors such as Adrien Brody, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walt Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Louiz Ozawa, Derek Mears, Brian Steele, and Cary Jones. “As legend has it, a serial killer will return to the quaint town of Riverton to murder the seven children that were born the night he allegedly died. Sixteen years after his death, members of the community begin to disappear. The plot focuses around the idea of his death being true, him still being at large or him possessing one of seven to complete the murders.”

Jeepers Creepers 3 – Cathedral Still Creeping Along

Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral, directed by Victor Salva, is slated to be released in 2009, um… 2010, um… 2011! Yeah, whatever.

23 years after the events of the original film, Trisha Jenner who now has a teenage son named Darry (named after her late brother who was killed by the Creeper) has a recurring nightmare of her son suffering the same fate. So she sets out with Jack Taggart and Jack Taggart Jr. to end The Creeper’s reign once and for all. Good luck with that.

Spielberg to Helm Robopocalypse by Cloverfield writer Drew Goddarde?

Robopocalypse, Daniel H. Wilson’s cautionary tale of man versus machine, was acquired by Dreamworks Studios last year. The buzz on the net: Spielberg will direct the apocalyptic nightmare. But the multiple Academy Award-winning director certainly has his plate full with his soon to be released The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (good luck with that) and Untitled Tintin Sequel plus an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel War Horse, not to mention an adaptation of 39 Clues.

82nd Annual Oscar Awards Nod To Horror Films?

I remember walking out of Jonathan Demme’s Silence of the Lambs over 19 years ago proclaiming it should win the Oscar for best picture (The Exorcist was nominated for Best Picture in 1973 but lost). My buddy, an Academy member, laughed and said, when hell freezes over. Well, hell froze over, and Silence of the Lambs received seven nominations and won five Oscars including Best Picture. After that evening M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense went on to received six Oscar Nominations in 1999, but didn’t win anything, and was really considered a mystery “I see dead people” thriller. But there’s buzz that the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Sunday, March 7th on ABC, will feature a montage dedicated to the horror genre. Hmmmm, it is a little chilly in hell these days.
