Ron Howard to direct Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Towers’

Universal Pictures and NBC Universal Television are bringing The Dark Tower to the movies. Three films as well as a TV show based on the Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” novels, short stories and comic books are in the works.

Ron Howard will direct the first film and first season of the TV show, which will be written by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman.

The Dark Tower, a sci-fi horror story, tells of the mysterious Gunslinger as he travels across a desolate and vaguely post-apocalyptic landscape in his quest for a black tower. Portals along the way eventually allow contact with our own modern world.

“I’ve been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers around the world,” King said. “Ron, Akiva, Brian along with Universal and NBC have a deep interest and passion for the ‘The Dark Tower’ series and I know that will translate into an intriguing series of films and TV shows that respect the origins and the characters in ‘The Dark Tower’ that fans have come to love.”

Hatchet II in Theaters Uncut with no MPAA rating

Dark Sky Films announced that in anticipation of the upcoming Halloween horror movie season, Adam Green’s HATCHET II will be distributed in theaters across the country beginning Oct 1. The film will be released without an MPAA rating, marking the widest release of an unrated genre film in more than 25 years.

A ferociously fun tribute to the old-school horror sensation slasher movies of the 80’s, HATCHET II is the follow-up to the popular original film, which was released theatrically in 2007 and became a sleeper-hit, gaining a wide following on DVD. The cast of HATCHET II features a cavalcade of horror movie icons including Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN) and Kane Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13th), reprising his role as serial killer Victor Crowley. Also starring are Tony Todd (CANDYMAN) and R.A. Mihailoff (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE).

Director Adam Green said, “Having a movie as graphically over the top as HATCHET II come out in major theatres unrated is an absolute dream come true — not only for the genre fans but for the entire make-up effects crew who normally have to watch their amazing achievements get sliced and diced for theatrical release. This is an important event for the horror genre and I hope the real horror fans support HATCHET II and help change the way genre films are released
theatrically from this day forward. Kudos to Dark Sky Films and AMC theaters for truly honoring the spirit of old school American horror and doing this right. Gorehounds won’t know what hit them!”

Dark Sky Films’ Newman added, “We are thrilled that audiences will not have to wait for a director’s cut or unrated version of Adam Green’s HATCHET II. On October 1st fans will have the opportunity to see Hatchet II in theaters exactly as it was intended to be seen: full-on, uncut and uncensored! We hope that this unrated release of HATCHET II marks a new trend in providing an uncompromised theatrical experience for genre film lovers nationwide.”

“Our AMC independent program embraces diverse storytelling of all types,” said AMC Theatres’ Vice President, Specialty & Alternative Content, Nikkole Dneson-Randolph. “Bringing a story like HATCHET II to our guests is a natural fit during this time of year and we’re excited to share the filmmakers’ vision on-screen in its intended state.”

The Amityville Horror (2005) – New Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack
From Michael Bay, the producer of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, comes the true story of Amityville. In November 1974 a family of six was brutally murdered. Now, a year later, an unsuspecting young father, George Lutz (Ryan Reynolds) and his wife Kathy (Melissa George) move with their children into the house that was the site of the horrific event. The house is now haunted by a murderous presence, and what follows is 28 days of unimaginable terror. With demonic visions of the dead and relentless screams of terror, this is the haunted house story that isn’t just a movie – it’s real.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) – New Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the cemetery, those brain-eating zombies are back and hungry for more tasty mortals. A fiendish mix of outrageous humor and heart-stopping terror, The Return of the Living Dead is a “veritable smorgasbord of fun” (LA Herald-Examiner) filled with skin-crawling jolts, eye-popping visuals and relentless surprise. On his first day on the job at an army surplus store, poor Freddy unwittingly releases nerve gas from a secret U.S. military canister, unleashing an unbelievable terror. The gas re-animates a corps of corpses, who arise from their graves with a ravenous hunger for human brains. Luckily for those carnivorous cadavers, there is a group of partying teens nearby, just waiting to be eaten!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) – New Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack
When filmy spores fall from space and take root in San Francisco, the city is beautifully transformed by spectacular and exotic flowers. But these lovely extraterrestrial blossoms have gruesome plans for their earthly admirers: to slowly clone their bodies and then dispose of the originals. “A first-rate suspense thriller” (Newsday), this sci-fi adventure is a “chilling” (Leonard Maltin), “dazzling” (The New York Times) and “stunning” (Cosmopolitan) thrill ride that will send your pulse rate soaring. With a brilliant screenplay by Academy Award® nominee W.D. Richter, filmmaker Philip Kaufman directs an all-star cast including Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum, Brooke Adams and Leonard Nimoy. With its mesmerizing style and awe-inspiring special effects, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is “a classic of the genre” (New York Post); a terrifying tale that “literally chills the blood” (The Hollywood Reporter).

The Order (2003) – New on Blu-ray
For centuries, a secret order of priests has existed within the Church. A renegade priest, Father Alex Bernier (Academy Award Winner Heath Ledger) is sent to Rome to investigate the mysterious death of one of the order’s most revered members. Following a series of strangely similar killings, Bernier launches an investigation that forces him to confront unimaginable evil and the terrifying knowledge that there is a fate worse than death. Also starring Peter Weller and Shannyn Sossamon, The Order “has all of the ingredients of a scary religious horror movie – renegade priests, heretical sects, demonic children, an arcane mystery, and a papal conspiracy” (Time Out). A thrilling journey from beginning to end, this chilling film “does not disappoint” (Sight and Sound).

Joe Hill follows dad, Stephen King to the movies

Joe Hill is following in the steps of his father Stephen King, and making the transition to Hollywood. His book, Heart-Shaped Box is being developed into a big screen thriller by director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire) who will rewrite and direct Heart-Shaped Box for Warner Bros.

The story tells of Jude Coyne, a middle aged rock-star and collector of all things strange and gruesome. One day, Jude buys a ghost on a third party site like eBay and it changes Jude’s life for the worse.

I wonder what dad read as bedtime stories when Hill was as a child.

Dragon Con Invades Atlanta

Except, unlike Sherman’s march to the sea or the ’96 Olympic Games, the costumed fans, actors, authors, directors, artists, etc. will be a lot less stressful for Hotlanta. Over Labor Day Weekend, September 3 through the 6th, Dragon Con will be in full effect with all things sci fi, fantasy and horror on display.

For those of you unfamiliar with Dragon Con, it is the largest multimedia popular culture convention dedicated to science fiction, fantasy, film, gaming, comics, art and music. It is a blast and if you’ve never been, I suggest going at least one time.

This year’s featured events include the annual Dragon Con parade, Awards Banquet, a charity auction for the Lupus Foundation, autograph sessions and a Scientific Paranormal Investigation workshop. They also have an annual film festival that rocks.

If you decide to attend, you’ll have the opportunity to meet such personalities as horror actress Danielle Harris (Halloween), Jason Voorhees himself, Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Luke Perry (Jeremiah), Saul Rubinek (Warehouse 13), Michelle Forbes (True Blood) as well as Vampire Babylon author, Chris Marie Green and Laurell K. Hamilton, author of the Anita Blake series.

I love conventions. They are such an awesome way to find out more about your fave books, films, games, etc. Most of all, it’s a great way to connect with others who geek out like you do over F/X, films, comics, etc. I would love, love to be going to this year’s Dragon Con. I haven’t been in over 8 years and I’ve missed it.

Quentin Dupieux (the real name of legendary DJ Mr. Ozio) has directed my hands-down favorite film of Cannes 2010. Robert, a very disgruntled psychokinetic automobile tire explodes the heads of birds, beasts and humans alike on a high-desert killing spree like no other.
